Elisabeth Osmeloski answers a few questions about this new blog and recent venture back into the search marketing consulting world.
What’s the deal with Adventures in Search?
Well, it’s a long time coming. I’ve been sitting on this domain for years. I was at a pretty transitional point in my career in search marketing. I had just spent my first couple years consulting on my own after being in a small agency environment.
My experience as a travel writer and ski/snowboard journalist was opening up exciting consulting opportunities in this very niche segment of adventure travel and action sports, and I was starting to become known for this area of expertise.
This was just about the time that I had joined Search Engine Watch full time as community leader and Editor. And it was about the time I’d just moved to Utah, so between deep powder days and conference travel, I didn’t have much spare time to develop the idea or the consulting business.
After a few years at Search Engine Watch, it was time to move on. I dove straight into an in-house position for a start-up in the online travel industry. What an eye opener! The experience provided a fascinating inside look at the traditional travel industry and its challenges as it shifts to Travel 2.0.
After attending and hosting a few online sessions at at couple of Travel industry conferences, I realized there’s still such a need for actionable, strategic advice and direction for small to medium sized businesses with regard to the fundamentals of search and social media optimization. And so, I decided it was time for the next adventure.
What will the Adventures blog cover?
While I’m sure this blog will grow pretty organically in terms of scope -and it will get better looking over time- it’s my intention to focus on my favorite aspects of online marketing: content creation, to online PR & link building with its natural extension to social media optimization.
The idea is to share my thoughts on Travel & Lifestyle focused industries and specifically pointing to examples of successes, failures and potential opportunities - I hope some of my writings will provide readers in these segments with some clarity, and help them navigate through the often confusing world of search and social media marketing. It’s really an adventure we’re taking together.
It’s All About Lifestyle for Traveling SEO’s
One underlying concept I always had for this site though, was to point out the excessive amount of fun we have in the search industry, and the camaraderie among SEO/SEM professionals. Beyond the fancy dinners, the open bar parties and the late conference evenings, the reality is, we always try to make our traveling for work a pleasurable experience, so we often see the touristy sites, and go on crazy outdoor adventures like whitewater rafting to dangerous shopping extravaganzas.
The travel industry certainly holds its own when it comes to exotic conference destinations, crazy cocktail parties and retreats filled with extra-curricular activities like golfing, skiing, boating and more. So I definitely see this as the best of both worlds!
Will there be an Adventures in Search branded conference or retreat?
Well, I hope so – even if it’s never formally made into an educational event, I definitely have an ulterior motive of holding some networking sessions – on snow, on sand, surf or high mountain turf.
